In the financial world it’s called brick and mortar. Somethin’ you can depend on. In our world of horses it’s called foundation. Good horseflesh. The type that can carry you in tough country or rope calves all day without givin’ out on you. A horse that can take you home at night when it’s darker than the inside of a black cow and never miss the trail. Keebe W Bar was just that quality of horse.
Foundation bred and intelligent, she looked after the safety of her band of horses with a strict discipline and every one knew to pay attention when she gave an order to move. She was a pleasure to ride and always seemed to know the right thing to do. Her true worth showed through one tough spring day on our high mountain ranch when a heavy snow pack caused devastating floods along the Jefferson River. Wild torrents of water rushed out of the mountains flooding the valley below. Our band of horses were missing for days and we feared the worst.
But Keebe W Bar brought them home–every last one. She was cut deep on the chest and I later found along the flooded river bank where she had broke through a barb wire fence to save her band where they had become trapped between the raging flood and the wire fence. This is her story
